A 40-foot luxury boat carrying Nebraska tourists exploded into flames just a quarter mile off Miami Beach on March 12, 2026, forcing passengers to scramble for their lives as the five-engine vessel became completely engulfed in fire.
Fire Breaks Out During Boating Event
Peter Fink, owner of the boat named “Size Matters,” was participating in a poker run with several other MTI boats when disaster struck. The group first noticed a burning smell coming from the vessel while traveling off the Florida coast. “Smelled some smoke and, you know, slowed down, figured out it’s our boat,” Fink told local media. Witness video captured thick plumes of black smoke rising into the air as flames consumed the entire vessel.
Passengers Signal For Help
Fink and his passengers attempted to control the blaze with a fire extinguisher, but the flames spread too quickly. Passenger Jason James described their desperate effort to attract attention from nearby boaters. “We waved down a boat, actually, shot the fire extinguisher a bit up into the air so they could see the smoke from the fire extinguisher, and it kind of caught their attention,” James explained. A passing boat responded to their distress signals, while an Ocean Rescue vessel soon arrived to evacuate all passengers safely.
Miraculous Escape With No Injuries
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units arrived by air and sea to assist with emergency response efforts. Family members worked together to lift each other onto rescue boats as flames intensified. “We had our heroes here that saved us all, threw us on the other boat,” passenger Irelynn James said. Despite the complete destruction of the luxury vessel, authorities recovered the family’s luggage unharmed from the wreckage. The charred remains were later towed to Haulover Inlet. Passenger Jason James, who was celebrating his upcoming 20th birthday, reflected on the close call: “I figured it wasn’t my time to go yet.” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue confirmed no injuries occurred, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Nebraska vacationers continued their Florida trip despite losing the boat.
