Pickup Truck CRASHES Into Michigan Synagogue

A naturalized US citizen rammed a pickup truck into a Michigan synagogue Thursday morning, crashing through the front doors while more than 100 children attended their early education center inside. The attacker died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after exchanging fire with armed security officers who stopped his rampage.

Two-Hour Wait Before the Attack

Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, 41, arrived at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township around 10 a.m. and sat in the parking lot for over two hours before accelerating into the building at 12:15 p.m. The truck barreled down a hallway and became wedged between walls as Ghazali began firing through the windshield. Two security officers returned fire, with one shooting through the rear window and another exchanging rounds from the front. During the gunfight, Ghazali fatally shot himself. The truck’s engine compartment caught fire, sending smoke throughout the facility.

Investigators discovered large quantities of commercial-grade fireworks and several jugs of gasoline inside the vehicle. Two days earlier, Ghazali had purchased $2,250 worth of fireworks from a Michigan store, according to company officials. The security guard struck by the truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while 63 first responders required treatment for smoke inhalation. All 100-plus children, aged five and younger, escaped without physical injury. Rabbi Arianna Gordon heard the shooting and smelled smoke before staff initiated shelter-in-place protocols.

Background and Investigation

Ghazali came to America in 2011 on a spouse visa from Lebanon and became a naturalized citizen in 2016. He lived in Dearborn Heights and worked at a Middle Eastern restaurant. His wife had filed for divorce before the attack. The FBI labeled the incident a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community, though investigators cautioned the motive remains under investigation. The assault occurred as the US-Israel war with Iran entered its third week, heightening security concerns at Jewish institutions nationwide.

Security Preparedness Saves Lives

Temple Israel’s armed security officers proved critical in stopping the attacker before he could harm children or staff. Jennifer Runyan, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Detroit field office, confirmed the guards’ quick response prevented further casualties. Jewish institutions across America have operated under heightened security for years amid rising antisemitic threats. Temple leaders thanked supporters for solidarity following the assault on their sacred home, acknowledging the preparedness measures that protected their community during this violent attack.
