Food Court ERUPTS As Teen FIRES Into Crowd

A 17-year-old suspect turned himself in to authorities on Friday on murder charges after opening fire in a crowded Louisiana shopping mall, killing an innocent high school senior and critically wounding a 43-year-old man who was simply eating lunch when violence erupted.

Suspect Faces Murder Charges After Food Court Attack

Markel Lee surrendered to Baton Rouge police with his attorney, facing first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and illegal firearm use. The shooting occurred just before 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the food court of the Mall of Louisiana when two groups engaged in a disagreement that escalated into gunfire. An officer assigned to mall security and a sheriff’s deputy in the parking lot immediately ran toward the danger, risking their lives to save others caught in the crossfire.

Martha Odom, a senior at Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, died at the scene. The school remembered her as a joyful presence whose kindness and infectious enthusiasm brought light to everyone who knew her. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, whose family has been friends with the Odoms for decades, demanded those responsible face the full force of the law for this senseless violence. Two other students from the same school were wounded but are recovering.

Multiple Victims and Ongoing Investigation

Donnie Guillory, 43, underwent surgery and remains hospitalized in critical condition. Several other people sustained injuries when the shooting erupted in the busy shopping area. Police Chief TJ Morse confirmed investigators used security footage and other tools to identify suspects. Detectives are actively searching for another suspect wanted in connection with the attack. Five people were taken into custody Thursday but were released pending further investigation.

Gang Ties and Social Media Beef Under Investigation

Authorities recovered one handgun at the scene and believe multiple handguns were used during the shooting. Chief Morse indicated the incident likely has ties to social media disputes and gang-related activity, though investigators remain in the early stages of determining the full scope of criminal involvement. Mayor-President Sid Edwards praised first responders who rushed into gunfire without hesitation, preventing what could have been an even deadlier tragedy. The investigation continues as authorities work to identify all individuals responsible for turning a public shopping area into a scene of violence and death.

  1. Wow, I’m amazed that it is one of those “Special” people who committed murder. Gee, say it isn’t so. Wonder how long it will take for him to be right back on the street.

  2. Immediately after graduating from high school, I enlisted in the military. I was 17 and three months from my 18th birthday. . I celebrated my 18th. birthday on a ship filled with other 18 year-old new recruits heading to Vietnam. I knew right from wrong and understood that if I violated any laws, I would be punished as an adult. There is a wonderful, talented young girl dead, an old person fighting for his life plus two others wounded because this animal wanted to be a big man and shoot into a crowded shopping mall. I would guess he did not even hit the person he was shooting at. This will all end in his being judged as a juvenile and deemed unable to understand what he has done. Nothing will bring this wonderful young lady back and erase the trauma the others will suffer for the remainder of their lives. I am 82 and a Vietnam War Combat Veteran with PTSD. The trauma never goes away , however, this POS will live to tell the tale of his murder and maiming of innocents to his gang banging brothers and get CREDS for the kill. It is time we treated these killings as the actions of mad dogs who need to be put down.

    • First, I want to say thank you for your service. I understand that Vietnam was a very difficult situation. I’m glad you made it home.

      Second, 43 isn’t old.

  3. Once again another person have taken a person life and maybe a second person. The killer should lose his life or spend His LIFE in prison. America court system need to send a message to ALL Violators that take someone’s life, they’ll lose there life.

      • I could not agree with you more. As soon a younger person picks up a firearm with malicious intent, to use it, they should lose their Minor Status & be tried as an Adult. Even the very young ones. Maybe not the Death Penalty or Life without Parole for the very young. But 17 is old enough to qualify for the Maximum Sentence. And that sentence should be carried out fairly quickly, not 35-40 years after the fact. And before some liberal starts yammering about the Death Penalty not being a deterrent! Two things: It sure is a deterrent to the one who did the crime. He/she will never do it again!! And second, how would they know? In most states a convicted murderer is well aware they stand a better chance of dying of old age than the Sentence ever being carried out.

    • Agree 100% enough with treating these young adults as juvies. Alot of them join these gangs & do the crimes because they will be treated as such. A life is still a life of a human being! You know right from wrong at these ages.
#1 NO more sanctuary cities #2:NO more No Bail laws. #3 stop the if you steal up to $999 vs 1K you get off. #4 Bring back Jail for juvies, got to get them starting younger to be punished so they hopefully change not to commit the worst crimes. LAWS MUST CHANGE AS THE JUDGES HANDS ARE TIED. Scared Straight when lesser crimes take place put them there hopefully will deter them. ENOUGH

  4. My mother told me, “THERE IS NO JUSTICE ANYMORE, IT WENT OUT WITH HIGH BUTTON SHOES!” Ahhhh, does anyone agree with that????? Usually, a slap on the wrist and they are free to roam again… What good is that? Families suffer at the lost of their loved ones but noone seems to do anything about it… I wish it wasn’t that way!!!
