A 17-year-old suspect turned himself in to authorities on Friday on murder charges after opening fire in a crowded Louisiana shopping mall, killing an innocent high school senior and critically wounding a 43-year-old man who was simply eating lunch when violence erupted.
Suspect Faces Murder Charges After Food Court Attack
Markel Lee surrendered to Baton Rouge police with his attorney, facing first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and illegal firearm use. The shooting occurred just before 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the food court of the Mall of Louisiana when two groups engaged in a disagreement that escalated into gunfire. An officer assigned to mall security and a sheriff’s deputy in the parking lot immediately ran toward the danger, risking their lives to save others caught in the crossfire.
Martha Odom, a senior at Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, died at the scene. The school remembered her as a joyful presence whose kindness and infectious enthusiasm brought light to everyone who knew her. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, whose family has been friends with the Odoms for decades, demanded those responsible face the full force of the law for this senseless violence. Two other students from the same school were wounded but are recovering.
Multiple Victims and Ongoing Investigation
Donnie Guillory, 43, underwent surgery and remains hospitalized in critical condition. Several other people sustained injuries when the shooting erupted in the busy shopping area. Police Chief TJ Morse confirmed investigators used security footage and other tools to identify suspects. Detectives are actively searching for another suspect wanted in connection with the attack. Five people were taken into custody Thursday but were released pending further investigation.
Gang Ties and Social Media Beef Under Investigation
Authorities recovered one handgun at the scene and believe multiple handguns were used during the shooting. Chief Morse indicated the incident likely has ties to social media disputes and gang-related activity, though investigators remain in the early stages of determining the full scope of criminal involvement. Mayor-President Sid Edwards praised first responders who rushed into gunfire without hesitation, preventing what could have been an even deadlier tragedy. The investigation continues as authorities work to identify all individuals responsible for turning a public shopping area into a scene of violence and death.
