A snow removal accident at a Massachusetts shopping center led to the emergency evacuation of approximately 100 people when equipment struck a gas meter, creating a dangerous leak with visible vapor clouds and loud roaring sounds.
Emergency Response at Hanover Crossing
Firefighters rushed to the Hanover Crossing shopping complex at 1775 Washington Street around 4 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a gas leak. The Hanover Fire Department discovered that snow removal equipment had struck an exterior gas meter assembly, causing an active leak with a significant vapor cloud. The department immediately recalled all off-duty firefighters to assist with the large-scale evacuation effort.
Major retailers, including Macy’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods, were among the businesses evacuated as a precautionary measure. The evacuation process proved challenging due to the shopping complex’s extensive parking area and numerous access points. Firefighters worked to establish a secure hazard zone while ensuring all occupants safely exited the affected buildings.
Utility Companies Secure the Scene
Eversource crews arrived on the scene and successfully secured the gas leak approximately one hour after the incident began. The leak was located below the shutoff valve, which facilitated the repair process. National Grid also responded to assist with securing electrical service in the affected area. Once the leak was contained, firefighters conducted thorough safety checks of nearby businesses, with several requiring ventilation before reopening.
Safety Measures and Recovery
Most businesses resumed normal operations within one hour of the gas leak being secured, though four stores remained closed for additional safety measures. The scene was completely cleared by 6:45 p.m., with Hanover Inspectional Services and Eversource remaining to complete utility repairs. No injuries were reported, and no one required hospitalization. Fire officials emphasized the importance of calling 911 immediately when gas leaks are suspected, particularly when strong odors, visible vapor clouds, or hissing sounds are present. The department also reminded the public to exercise extra caution when operating snow removal equipment near utility meters to prevent similar incidents.
