A 21-year-old Florida college student sent her family a final message moments before she was killed in a devastating collision with a wrong-way driver who authorities arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Tragic Final Moments
Lauryn Akey, a promising university student, was driving when she was struck by Dennis Olson, who was traveling in the wrong direction. The horrific crash claimed her young life instantly, leaving her family devastated and searching for answers. Police arrested Olson at the scene on suspicion of drunk driving, though official charges are still pending as investigators complete their analysis of the collision.
The heartbroken family revealed that Lauryn had sent them a text message just before the fatal impact. While authorities have not disclosed the exact contents of that final communication, family members described it as a touching reminder of their last connection with the vibrant young woman whose life was cut tragically short. The message now serves as a painful keepsake for relatives struggling to cope with their sudden loss.
Investigation Underway
Law enforcement officials are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the wrong-way crash. Authorities are examining whether alcohol impairment played a role in Olson’s decision to drive against traffic flow on the roadway where the collision occurred. Toxicology results and accident reconstruction analysis will determine the formal charges prosecutors bring against the driver.
Wrong-way driving incidents have become an increasing concern for Florida highway safety officials, who note that such collisions often result in catastrophic outcomes due to the combined speed of vehicles traveling in opposite directions. These crashes typically occur at night and frequently involve impaired drivers who fail to recognize road signs or traffic patterns.
Community Mourns Promising Student
Friends and classmates remembered Lauryn as a dedicated student with a bright future ahead of her. The university community has rallied around her family during this difficult time, organizing memorials and support networks for those affected by the tragedy. Her death serves as yet another reminder of the devastating consequences when individuals make the reckless choice to drive while potentially impaired, endangering innocent lives on the roadway.

Such a senseless, tragic loss of a young life with her whole future ahead of her. RIP Lauren Akey. Our thoughts and prayers to the grieving Akey family.
was THIS his first rodeo? Maybe some judges need to stand in court, explain themselves, to a REAL judge
TODAY if we are looking for JUSTICE, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll find any REAL JUSTICE… It probably was NOT his first rodeo … To bad somebody didn’t put him away so that he could not do this again… Such a shame. I am sure the family of this beautiful young lady are heartbroken and devastated. GOD be with them in this crucial time. Hope they will receive comfort… It’s a terrible tragedy… So senseless… I hope he will receive the FULL punishment this time…
I don’t care if was drunk or not life in prison !
We all have a choice when drinking. Society has a choice when someone kills or injures another while driving impaired. There is no secret here. This person should serve the maximum prison time and never be allowed to drive again. He should have to rely on someone else to drive him where ever he wants to go or pay someone to drive him. Even then, he will have a better choice then the young lady he killed.
To Moule:
Yes life in prison! I was the victim of a drunk driver head-on collision 58 years ago. To this date I suffer debilitating pain to my back and hip! I used to be a runner with an opportunity as a leg model which for obvious reasons did not pan out! Someone else made a decision to influence my future.
