Family DRAGGED Into Federal Court After Reporter Assault

A federal grand jury indicted three family members on assault charges after they allegedly attacked a conservative journalist during a Minneapolis protest, with dramatic video footage capturing the violent confrontation that left the reporter concussed and injured.

Federal Charges Filed Against Minnesota Family

Christopher and DeYanna Ostroushko and their daughter Paige each face one count of federal assault after the April 11 incident outside the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building. Christopher and Paige also face charges of interfering with a federally protected activity. The family was protesting Metro Surge operations when they confronted Turning Point USA contributor Savanah Hernandez. Christopher Ostroushko additionally faces state misdemeanor assault charges from the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. All three family members are scheduled to appear before a federal judge on May 12.

Violent Attack Captured On Multiple Cameras

Widely circulated video from multiple angles shows Paige Ostroushko blowing a whistle directly in Hernandez’s face before the physical confrontation escalated. The footage captures Hernandez attempting to protect herself while Paige pushed her backward into a fence. After the initial assault, both parents separately confronted the journalist. According to prosecutors, Christopher Ostroushko forcefully shoved Hernandez head-first to the ground from behind. Bystanders attempted to separate the combatants and de-escalate the situation throughout the incident. Hernandez reported broken glasses, a concussion, neck and back pain, and scraped legs following the attack.

Justice Department Takes Strong Stance

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche condemned the assault in a statement, declaring the Department of Justice will punish political violence. Blanche emphasized that Hernandez was surrounded, physically assaulted, and shoved to ground simply because defendants identified her as a conservative journalist. The attack represents the opposite of peaceful protest, according to federal prosecutors. Hernandez expressed gratitude for the justice system’s response to the incident. Defense attorney James Cook indicated the family will mount a vigorous defense, claiming circulated videos do not show the complete picture and could potentially exonerate his clients.

Severe Consequences For Family Members

The Ostroushko family has faced serious repercussions beyond criminal charges. Both Christopher and DeYanna lost their jobs following the incident, and the family has received online threats. Cook stated his clients were regular protesters at the federal building and wish they could reverse what happened. However, Hennepin County prosecutors determined sufficient evidence existed only to charge Christopher at the state level, finding insufficient evidence for state charges against DeYanna and Paige. The case highlights growing tensions between protesters and media representatives covering political demonstrations across the country.
