A 16-year-old driver fleeing from police slammed into three vehicles at a North Carolina intersection, leaving a 61-year-old motorist injured and shocking witnesses who described the scene as the worst crash they had seen in two decades.
High-Speed Chase Ends in Multi-Vehicle Collision
Deputies from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle driving erratically around 12:30 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Patterson Avenue and Germanton Road. The driver, identified as 16-year-old Eleazar Medina, refused to stop and attempted to flee from law enforcement. The chase ended moments later when Medina crashed into multiple vehicles in the middle of the intersection, causing serious injuries to an elderly driver caught in the collision.
Todd Porter, who works near the intersection, witnessed the incident unfold while meeting with a client. He saw a vehicle speed past his building at dangerous speeds before hearing a loud bang. Porter and his coworker rushed outside to find three damaged cars in the intersection. One vehicle sustained such severe damage that the door could not be opened, trapping someone inside who appeared to be struggling.
Mother Faces Criminal Charges
Medina now faces multiple serious charges including felony hit and run with serious injury or death, operating without a license, and eluding arrest. His mother, 35-year-old Adilene Callejah, also faces criminal charges for her role in allowing the incident to occur. Authorities charged her with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and one count of allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a vehicle. The charges highlight the legal responsibility parents bear when they permit underage, unlicensed individuals to drive.
Intersection Known for Traffic Problems
Porter told reporters that while the intersection has seen its share of accidents over the years, nothing compared to Thursday’s crash. Drivers frequently attempt to beat red lights while coming down a hill, leading to fender benders and close calls. However, Porter’s boss, who has worked at the location for 20 years, confirmed he had never witnessed such a devastating collision at that spot. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and the importance of parental oversight when it comes to vehicle access for minors.
