Violent Attack Goes Unaddressed

The victim, an Orthodox Jewish woman working as a nurse, was attacked Sunday on a C train by 45-year-old Diana Smith, who screamed medieval blood libels including “Jews are eating kids” while physically assaulting her. Video footage circulating on social media shows the suspect confronting the young woman with deranged antisemitic statements before yanking out her hair and shoving her to the ground. The victim told reporters she felt like a ragdoll, unable to defend herself, and that bystanders should have formed a protective barrier around her.

Smith, who has a documented history of mental illness according to law enforcement sources, now faces hate crime charges including assault from the NYPD. The attack occurred amid alarming statistics showing a 74.4% overall increase in hate crimes during May compared to the same month in 2025, with anti-Jewish incidents specifically jumping from 24 to 41 cases.

Leadership Vacuum Draws Condemnation

Mayor Mamdani remained silent for four days following the attack and actively avoided questions about the hate crime spike, ignoring a reporter’s inquiry as he departed a Thursday press conference about World Cup preparations. Moshe Spern, head of United Jewish Teachers advocacy group, stated that when the city’s leader cannot speak out against raw antisemitic violence invoking the darkest historical libels, it signals to every hater that such cruelty is tolerable in New York.

Mark Treyger, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, called the NYPD data sobering and demanded that public officials do more than rely on police work alone. He emphasized that the crisis requires leaders to lower the temperature because words, actions, and equivocations all matter when protecting human rights and the dignity of Jewish New Yorkers.

Rising Concerns Over Public Safety

Queens Councilwoman Joann Ariola warned that many residents feel increasingly unsafe, noting that 152 hate crimes against Jewish New Yorkers have already occurred this year. She criticized the mayor for ignoring a worsening problem that demands strong messaging to control. Anti-Muslim hate crimes also increased 66.7% during the same period, rising from three to five reported incidents in May. Religious advocates and local politicians across party lines are calling for stronger leadership and clear denunciations of hate-motivated violence to protect all New Yorkers and uphold the city’s core values of tolerance and safety.
