A Philadelphia man who allegedly terrorized downtown pedestrians while wearing a cracked Chucky-style doll mask and threatening to kill them was arrested in Las Vegas following a multi-state manhunt coordinated by U.S. Marshals.

Victim Asked If She Was Ready To Die

Zymire Hughes, 22, allegedly approached multiple victims near Philadelphia City Hall during the early morning hours of August 12, chasing and threatening them while recording the encounters on his cellphone. In one disturbing incident, authorities say Hughes confronted a 40-year-old female jogger and asked, “Are you ready to die?” while positioning his arm behind his back as if concealing a weapon. The terrified woman fled and sustained a leg injury requiring extensive medical treatment during her escape.

Philadelphia police issued an active aggravated assault warrant for Hughes, who was already on probation in an unrelated Montgomery County case. District Attorney Larry Krasner issued a direct warning to Hughes during a news conference before his capture, asking pointedly: “If Zymire Hughes was trying to scare people, make them run — who’s scared now? Who’s running now?”

Cross-Country Flight Ends In Nevada Arrest

The U.S. Marshals Service’s Philadelphia office, working alongside the Nevada Violent Offender Task Force, tracked Hughes across multiple states before locating him in Las Vegas. Federal authorities determined Hughes fled Pennsylvania on August 19, flying from Trenton-Mercer Airport in New Jersey to Orlando, Florida, before continuing to Nevada. Investigators discovered Hughes had maintained work connections in Nevada and California since relocating to Las Vegas in February.

Task force officers found Hughes after he spent five days hiding at a southeast Las Vegas apartment complex. Surveillance footage from the complex proved critical in pinpointing his location. When officers moved in for the arrest, Hughes allegedly questioned why he was being detained and resisted before deputies subdued him. He is currently held at the Clark County Detention Center awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania.
