An Alabama woman who was eight months pregnant when she shot and killed another expectant mother in front of children now faces the death penalty as a jury deliberates her fate in a Birmingham courtroom.
Fatal Confrontation Over Shared Partner
Aaniyah Nowden, 24, was charged with multiple counts of capital murder after shooting Justina Wallace, 36, in the head during a July 2023 altercation. Both women were pregnant and shared children with the same man, who was present during the deadly encounter. Wallace was holding her young daughter Sky when she was shot, with her other children standing just feet away. She died the following day at the hospital.
Prosecutors presented video evidence showing the moment Nowden fired the fatal shot. The 24-year-old faces three counts of capital murder of two or more people, capital murder of a child, and capital murder in the presence of children. She gave birth while incarcerated and now awaits the jury’s verdict after a previous trial ended in mistrial due to insufficient jurors remaining after jury pool strikes.
Self-Defense Claim Versus Prosecution’s Case
Nowden admitted to the shooting but claims she acted in self-defense, fearing for her life during the confrontation. Her defense attorneys argued that Wallace arrived in an aggressive and belligerent state, suggesting the victim was under the influence of substances prosecutors downplayed. Defense attorney Louvenia Borom reminded jurors they must find no reasonable doubt to convict, emphasizing the high standard required for a guilty verdict.
Deputy District Attorneys Jason Wilson and Amanda Wineman countered that Wallace posed no threat, carrying only her infant daughter with no weapons. Wilson stated the mother was attacking no one when shot. Wineman argued that yelling at an unreliable partner does not justify lethal force, regardless of the verbal confrontation’s intensity. Prosecutors characterized the defense’s witnesses as biased and presented testimony from two of Wallace’s sons, aged eight and nine at the time.
Family Mourns Devoted Mother
Shamari Cooke, Wallace’s sister, described the victim as a devoted mother to five children who worked daily to build a better life for her family. The family celebrated young Sky’s birthday just days after Wallace’s death, a painful reminder of the children left behind. Cooke expressed grief that her sister would never witness her children growing up or achieving their dreams.

Sad and horrible and seemingly too common among this group. I knew what color the murderer was just by reading her name. I hope the surviving children are in a loving home.
She desrves what the is planned, no excuse for her murder she committed
Cheating dad now has several kids to take care of himself and Nowden gets capital murder charges for the death of an unborn child. A lot of people could face charges of intentional murder of an unborn child through abortion.
That ‘sperm donor’ father will never take care of his children. Not financially, not physically, not emotionally. Those children will be left with their mothers’ families to raise. Hopefully, they will be loved and raised properly.
This is indeed a horrible situation but I don’t see what “color” has to do with it. Whether the deceased or perpetrator is Black, White, Yellow or Brown, a life has been taken and children are without their mother. In this case, maybe execution would be too easy. Instead, if the law permits, retain her in solitary confinement in jail for the rest of her life, without the chance of parole, no visitors, and no interaction with anyone. She may repent one day for the wrong.
People who commit murder NOT deserve to live longer. Why do you insist that we taxpayers foot the bill for her for the next 50 + years?
Four responses here; 1. Juanita B, “Color” is very important here because the black race kills more of their own per population than any other race. FACT OF LIFE!! There was only one gun brought to this fight and the person who shot a defenseless woman should pay with here life. 2. Rattlerjake, I agree 100% with you. 3. This is premediated murder. The only reason one brings a gun to a gathering is to shoot someone. A Murder One conviction is the only thing that will bring closure for her family. 4. Freydis is absolutely correct. The father of all of these children has already shown he is incapable of restraint.
