A former White House security staffer who worked under both President Biden and President Trump faces involuntary manslaughter charges after allegedly shooting his girlfriend to death in San Francisco’s Sunset District.

From Presidential Security to Murder Charges

Nation Wood, 25, was arrested Wednesday following the fatal shooting of Samantha Emge, 22, at a residence near Ocean Beach on Tuesday evening. Wood worked as a part-time security staffer for Biden’s Secret Service team starting in November 2023 and continued through July 2025 under the Trump administration. His LinkedIn profile identified him as an independent pre-event site security advisor who conducted external security assessments for VIP attendance and coordinated with the Secret Service for senior government officials and high-net-worth individuals.

Officers responded to the home at 10:43 p.m. Tuesday and discovered Emge suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a hospital where she died from her injuries. Homicide investigators collected evidence linking Wood to the shooting and took him into custody less than 24 hours later. He remained in San Francisco County Jail on Friday.

Photos With Vice President Surface

Wood previously shared photos on social media showing him smiling alongside then-Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff in front of a presidential jet in 2024. The post thanked the opportunity to help with Harris’s trip to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit hosted in San Francisco. Wood graduated from San Francisco State University in May 2024 with a degree in political science and government, while also working as a property manager for a self-storage facility.

Victim Remembered by Friends

Emge graduated from San Francisco State University in 2025 and worked in interior design. Friends confirmed Wood was her boyfriend, and her Instagram account showed multiple photos of the couple together, including trips to Yosemite following her graduation. One post from early 2025 showed them wearing baseball caps with the caption about traveling and becoming a real adult. Supervisor Alan Wong, who represents the district where the shooting occurred, suggested the incident may not have been intentional. The Secret Service did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding Wood’s employment history with the agency.
