Texas Mayor ARRESTED — Election Scheme Alleged

Fred Burton, the sitting mayor of Arcola, Texas, spent Wednesday night in a jail cell after authorities arrested him on five criminal charges, including illegal voting and defrauding his own city of up to $150,000.

Multiple Fraud Schemes Uncovered

The Fort Bend County indictment alleges Burton orchestrated several criminal schemes between 2023 and April 2026. During his previous mayoral term in 2023, prosecutors claim Burton convinced two City Council members to sign fraudulent checks totaling between $30,000 and $150,000. Court documents reveal he also falsified estimates from a food project to defraud Arcola taxpayers and misused contractor information during the city bidding process, tampering with government records for personal gain.
Burton faces two counts of illegal voting, misusing personal information, tampering with government records, and fraudulently securing execution. The Fort Bend County District Attorney’s office confirmed he appeared before a magistrate judge Wednesday, where authorities set multiple bonds totaling several thousand dollars. For just one illegal voting charge, Burton could face between 2 and 20 years in prison if convicted.

Election Integrity Violations

The most recent charges stem from the April 2026 and 2025 Arcola elections. Prosecutors allege Burton knowingly helped at least three people vote in municipal elections despite being aware they did not live within city limits. The indictment claims he actively facilitated the illegal voting and failed to prevent ineligible voters from casting ballots in city races. Burton’s troubled tenure has sparked mixed reactions among residents. Bertha Cooper, an Arcola resident, described him as an absent leader. “When I come and ask for him, they say he wasn’t there,” Cooper told reporters. Melodie Kent, another community member, acknowledged the difficult path ahead. “No matter what happened in the past, whether it’s good, bad or ugly, we’re here today, this has transpired, and now we as a community will have to figure out how we can move forward,” Kent said.

History Of Controversy

This arrest marks the latest chapter in Burton’s contentious political career. Previous reports documented a heated parking lot confrontation with his predecessor, Veeda Williams, following a years-long feud between the two politicians. During his fourth-term mayoral campaign, Arcola police increased security around Burton after someone delivered a noose to his office, raising serious safety concerns. The Arcola city government and all council members have declined to comment on the charges. With their mayor now facing potentially decades in prison, residents must grapple with questions about leadership accountability and election integrity as the legal process unfolds in Fort Bend County courts.
