Hunter Metcalf received a 30-second standing ovation at Memorial High School in Frisco, Texas, as he accepted a posthumous diploma for his murdered twin brother Austin during Thursday’s graduation ceremony, honoring a young athlete whose life was cut short during a school sports event.
Stabbing Death At Championship Track Meet
Austin Metcalf, a 16-year-old track and football star, was fatally stabbed in April 2025 during a championship track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco. The attack occurred in broad daylight at a school-sanctioned athletic event. Austin died in Hunter’s arms following the stabbing. The twins were juniors at Frisco Memorial High School when the tragedy occurred.
Karmelo Anthony, then 17 years old and a student at rival Frisco Centennial High School, was charged with first-degree murder. Anthony, now 18, faces between 5 and 99 years in prison if convicted. The case continues to work through the criminal justice system.
Controversial Bond Reduction And Gag Order
A judge reduced Anthony’s bond from $1 million to $250,000 last year and placed him on house arrest with an ankle monitor. Anthony’s defense attorney argued the reduction was appropriate because the defendant had no prior arrests and should be allowed to stay with his family. The judge granted the request, allowing Anthony to post bond and await trial from home.
The same judge later imposed a gag order on the Metcalf family, preventing them from speaking publicly about the case. The family has remained silent about Thursday’s graduation ceremony due to the ongoing legal restrictions connected to the criminal proceedings.
Emotional Graduation Tribute
During Memorial High School’s graduation ceremony, Hunter first walked across the stage to receive his own diploma. He then returned moments later to accept Austin’s posthumous diploma on his brother’s behalf. The arena erupted in applause as the crowd rose to honor Austin’s memory. The standing ovation lasted approximately 30 seconds, according to local news reports.
The ceremony provided closure for a community still processing the loss of a promising young athlete. Austin’s death shocked North Texas, particularly the tight-knit community at Memorial High School where both brothers were well-known student athletes. The posthumous diploma recognizes what would have been Austin’s academic achievements had he lived to complete his education.
If the defendant was white he would have already been tried and sentenced to 99 years!
The victims family is imposed with a gag order, but the person charged with his murder gets freedom to go home and no gag order. What a screwed up world the current “powers that be” have created for us to navigate in!

The sentencing and the gag order are totally outrageous and should be appealed. Collin County District Judge John Roach Jr was appointed by the Supreme Court of Texas – his name is appropriate for what he is. Roach’s appointment needs to be revisited to see if this is a pattern and he should be impeached by the citizens of Collin County. Shame on him!

Talk about preferential treatment! If it was the other way around it would have been different. That kid gets to go home with his family, the other family is the one getting punished in so many ways. So so Screwed up!
Lots of things in the USA are screwed up… The justice system is one of them but it’s been that way for years. My mom once told me that justice went OUT with high button shoes so that was many years ago… Does anyone even remember when High Button Shoes were popular? Hummmm… Will things ever be right? This guy that murdered this boy will get the least possible sentence, you can count on it. Sad what our country and the judicial system has become. The worse the crime, the more lenient these bleeding heart liberal judges become. Very very few sitting on the bench today in America care about justice nor the law. Of course, look no farther than the Supremes, that should paint the picture for you.
