The bodycam footage, recently obtained by Law and Crime, shows Mashburn-Smith explaining how she facilitated the encounters by leaving a crack in the side door so the teen could enter after football practice. Other times, she would let him in after he knocked. The teacher told officers the encounters were not premeditated, claiming they would hug and talk before any sexual activity occurred.

Court documents reveal the inappropriate relationship began when the student called Mashburn-Smith “pretty” on Snapchat, leading to flirting between the pair. The teen started making extra visits to her classroom where they eventually kissed and had intercourse at least twice. The married teacher complained to the student about her marriage and told him she wanted to leave her husband for him when he turned 18, the legal age of consent in Florida.
The declarations concerned the teenager, who stopped communicating and blocked his teacher. Mashburn-Smith continued messaging him on Snapchat despite being blocked. When questioned by police, she admitted she “made a mistake” and acknowledged the student was “just a teenager,” but said he made her feel desired.
