Tour Bus ERUPTS In Flames — One Dead

A tour bus erupted in flames on a Southern California freeway early Friday morning, killing at least one person and forcing the closure of multiple lanes during the morning commute in Los Angeles County.

Fire Engulfs Vehicle on Morning Commute

California Highway Patrol responded to reports of the burning bus at approximately 5:38 a.m. on State Route 60 near Azusa Avenue in Hacienda Heights. Officers arrived to find the vehicle stopped on the right shoulder with intense flames consuming the rear section of the bus. By 6:50 a.m., authorities confirmed at least one fatality, transforming what began as a vehicle fire investigation into a death probe.

Images from the scene revealed the back half of the tour bus completely destroyed, with flames having consumed several rows of passenger seating. The Los Angeles County Fire Department extinguished the blaze, but not before the fire caused extensive damage to the vehicle’s interior. Officials issued a SigAlert as the third and fourth lanes remained closed for investigation, creating traffic delays throughout eastern Los Angeles County.

Safety Questions Surrounding Tour Company

The bus appeared linked to a Mexican travel company based on visible markings. When contacted, an employee at a company location in Pacoima acknowledged awareness of the incident but declined to confirm whether the bus belonged to their fleet or provide additional details about the circumstances.

Federal transportation records show the company underwent 19 vehicle inspections over the past two years, with five resulting in out-of-service designations. This out-of-service rate exceeded the national average, though the carrier currently maintains a satisfactory safety rating. No crashes were reported for the company during the same period, according to Department of Transportation data.

Investigation Underway

California Highway Patrol requested the Los Angeles County Coroner to examine the scene as investigators work to determine what sparked the deadly blaze. The bus showed no signs of collision damage, and luggage compartments were found open, raising questions about the fire’s origin. Authorities have not released information about how many passengers were aboard or whether additional injuries occurred beyond the confirmed fatality.
