A parolee unleashed a hail of gunfire on Monday afternoon along Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, critically wounding two drivers and striking multiple vehicles including a state police cruiser and postal truck before armed citizens stopped the attack.
Street Rampage Leaves Two Fighting for Life
Tyler Brown, 46, fired between 50 and 60 rounds from an assault-style rifle into moving traffic on Memorial Drive during Monday afternoon rush hour. Two men driving separate vehicles suffered life-threatening injuries from the indiscriminate shooting. The attack ended when a Massachusetts State Trooper and a former Marine, both legally armed, returned fire and struck Brown. The suspect now faces two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and criminal weapons possession charges while hospitalized under guard.
Wellness Check Triggers Violent Response
The shooting spree began moments after a police officer attempted a wellness check at Brown’s residence. His parole officer had reported Brown made suicidal statements earlier that day, prompting the welfare visit. Instead of cooperating, Brown allegedly grabbed his weapon and headed to Memorial Drive where he opened fire on unsuspecting motorists. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan confirmed the timeline, noting the rapid escalation from mental health concern to public violence happened within minutes of the initial welfare check attempt.
Armed Response Prevented Mass Casualties
District Attorney Ryan emphasized the shooting could have produced far more victims without immediate armed resistance. The weapon Brown used had sufficient range and power to strike people across the Charles River, she explained during a press briefing. The quick action by the state trooper and armed Marine veteran likely saved numerous lives by stopping Brown before he could continue firing into traffic. Multiple vehicles sustained gunfire damage during the chaotic exchange, creating a debris field stretching several blocks along the busy thoroughfare. Brown remains hospitalized with gunshot wounds sustained when defenders returned fire. Prosecutors plan to file formal charges once his medical condition stabilizes enough for court appearance.

Once a Marine, always a Marine. Kudos to this retired leather-neck.
Too bad he forgot how to eliminate the target.
Exactly! There’s no such thing as a ‘former’ Marine.
anyone want to BET, this was NOT HIS FIRST RODEO? some judge, some where needs to break the CHAIN or RAP SHEETS…. BEFORE someone dies. OR after the FIRST one dies…. give US something to “believe” in
This is exactly why my wife and my self are trained and licensed to carry our firearms. Had that marine had not assisted things may have gone a lot worse. God bless our Amendment right to carry.
YOU no longer have the “right” to carry because YOU paid for a license which turned it into a privilege. Because of people like you who have conformed to unconstitutional “laws”, the states and federal government are getting away with their illegal restrictions.
Hmm. An armed citizen used his gun to help stop the shooter obviously saving lives with his gun. Imagine that. I wonder how this is reported in the main stream media. If they do, they’ll probably play up the fact he was a retired Marine but that makes no difference. The fact that an armed citizen used his gun to save lives is all that is needed to know.
Just wait, this was in Massachusetts, and the next thing they will do is find some BS reason to charge him for using his gun!
Short ropes are cheaper!
HELLO Liberal Boston.
Suicide by cop?
Bravo to the Marine for stepping up
