A Florida man casually sipped a hot beverage inside an Orlando IHOP restaurant Monday moments after allegedly stabbing a rideshare driver who refused to give him a ride without an app request, according to police body camera footage that captured the bizarre arrest.
Attack Over Ride Refusal
Jovaughn Nathan Matthie allegedly attacked the rideshare driver after the victim refused to provide transportation without a proper request through the rideshare application, according to the Orlando Police Department. The driver’s condition has not been released by authorities, but Matthie now faces attempted murder charges in connection with the Monday incident. After the stabbing, Matthie fled to a nearby IHOP location in northeastern Orlando where officers located him sitting calmly inside the restaurant.
Body camera footage released by the department shows multiple officers surrounding Matthie as he sat drinking his beverage. The restaurant had been completely cleared of other customers by the time officers moved in to make the arrest. Officers repeatedly commanded Matthie to get on the ground, lie on his stomach, and place his hands behind his back while approaching the suspect.
K-9 Warning During Arrest
When Matthie responded slowly to commands to place his hands behind his back, an officer holding a police dog issued a stark warning that he would be bitten by the canine if he failed to comply immediately. After officers handcuffed the suspect and lifted him to his feet, they noticed a long object protruding from his pocket during the pat-down search. Another officer carefully reached into Matthie’s sweatpants and retrieved what he identified as a knife wrapped in white cloth, according to the arrest video.
Investigation Continues
The Orlando Police Department has declined to release additional details about the incident, stating that certain information is being withheld to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. The bizarre nature of the arrest, with the suspect calmly sitting in a public restaurant immediately after the alleged violent attack, highlights the unpredictable dangers rideshare drivers face when dealing with potential passengers who attempt to circumvent standard safety protocols built into transportation apps.
