Hospital Rooftop Incident Unfolds

Leon Gillespie climbed onto the roof of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital on June 6, remaining perched atop the building for approximately 50 minutes while making disturbing noises at people on the ground. Gillespie, who hails from the small Welsh town of Deganwy, wore a black hooded costume and carried a long blade during the stunt. Medical staff and patients were forced to witness the bizarre spectacle as the costumed figure loomed above them at the healthcare facility.

Authorities eventually removed Gillespie from the hospital building and charged him with causing a nuisance or disturbance without reasonable excuse on National Health Service grounds. The incident disrupted normal hospital operations and created an unsettling environment for those seeking medical care. The hospital is managed by the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Wales’ largest health board overseeing multiple medical facilities across the region.

Court Appearance and Shoplifting Charges

Gillespie appeared in court on July 15 where he admitted to the nuisance charge and was fined 200 British pounds, approximately 269 American dollars. During the hearing, Gillespie claimed his costume was meant to resemble a bird, not the Grim Reaper—the skeletal figure traditionally depicted with a hooded robe and curved blade symbolizing death. The court rejected this explanation given the obvious appearance and threatening nature of the display.

Additional charges revealed Gillespie had committed two separate shoplifting offenses prior to the hospital incident. He stole cat food and litter valued at roughly 50 dollars from a pet store in Llandudno, North Wales, on March 26. He struck again on May 28, taking goods from a Sainsbury’s supermarket in the same town. These theft convictions resulted in additional fines totaling approximately 336 dollars, bringing his total financial penalties to over 600 dollars.

The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board issued a statement emphasizing its firm stance against such behavior.
