Federal authorities executed a search warrant at a Beverly Hills mansion Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation into former California Representative Eric Swalwell, who resigned from Congress in April amid multiple accusations of sexual misconduct.
Second Federal Search Operation
The Beverly Hills raid marks the second major FBI operation connected to the Swalwell investigation. In August, federal agents searched the former congressman’s Washington D.C. residence and confiscated his electronic devices at San Francisco International Airport. Sources familiar with the matter confirmed the operation centers on allegations of sexual misconduct. Swalwell was not arrested or detained during either operation. At least five women, including a former staff member, have publicly accused the former lawmaker of sexual misconduct or rape.
Chinese Intelligence Connection Resurfaces
The investigation gained additional momentum this week following the White House’s declassification of documents detailing Swalwell’s relationship with Christine Fang, identified as a suspected Chinese intelligence operative. The newly released FBI records reveal Swalwell acknowledged having physical relations with Fang on multiple occasions, with their final encounter occurring in March 2015. The documents show FBI agents interviewed Swalwell twice—first in May 2015 and again in March 2016—regarding his connection to Fang, whose parents were reportedly known Chinese intelligence officers with suspected ties to China’s Ministry of State Security.
Resignation Under Pressure
Swalwell ended his thirteen-year congressional career in April after facing the threat of expulsion from the House of Representatives. His resignation also ended his campaign for California governor. At the time, he issued a statement vowing to fight what he called false allegations while accepting responsibility for unspecified mistakes. The White House’s new Government Transparency Task Force released the declassified documents Monday, bringing renewed attention to national security concerns surrounding elected officials and foreign intelligence operations. The former Democratic congressman’s political downfall represents a dramatic reversal for a lawmaker who previously served on high-profile congressional committees with access to sensitive intelligence information.
