Five teenage boys, all 17 years old, died when their vehicle plunged off a cliff in a residential Colorado neighborhood late Saturday night, marking one of the deadliest single-vehicle crashes involving minors in recent state history.
Late Night Crash in Residential Area
Grand Junction police and fire personnel discovered the crashed vehicle on a steep hillside Sunday morning around 8 a.m. after receiving reports of a car that had driven off the edge of a cliff in the 2000 block of Lookout Lane. The crash occurred in a residential section of the western Colorado city, where the roadway borders a sharp incline. All five occupants were pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency personnel.
Investigators determined the vehicle had been traveling southbound on Lookout Lane when it veered off the roadway and tumbled down the steep hillside. The Grand Junction Police Department stated that speed is being considered as a contributing factor in the crash, which remains under active investigation. Multiple emergency response agencies worked together to recover the bodies from the difficult terrain of the crash site.
Seatbelt Use May Have Been Factor
The Mesa County Coroner’s Office revealed Monday that only three of the five teenagers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The driver, front seat passenger, and one additional occupant had been restrained, while two other occupants were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicle during the violent descent. All five victims died from injuries sustained in the crash. The coroner’s office confirmed all the deceased were Grand Junction residents but declined to publicly identify them, citing a standing policy against releasing the names of minors.
Community Mourns Young Lives Lost
The Grand Junction Police Department expressed condolences in a statement released following the tragedy. “Our hearts are heavy following the tragic losses this weekend,” the department said. The incident has shaken the western Colorado community, where fatal crashes involving multiple teenage victims remain rare. Authorities continue gathering evidence and interviewing potential witnesses as they work to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the deadly crash. The investigation will likely examine factors including vehicle speed, road conditions, and whether impairment played any role in the accident.
