A 28-year-old Florida driver attempted to hijack a medical helicopter that had landed to transport crash victims after he caused a multi-vehicle collision on a Hernando County highway, authorities reported.
Bizarre Theft Attempt After Highway Collision
The incident unfolded when the driver, identified as a Florida resident, crashed his truck into another vehicle on the highway, sending two occupants to the hospital with serious injuries. Emergency responders shut down the road and called in a BayFlight medical helicopter to airlift the wounded patients. While paramedics prepared the injured for transport, the suspect allegedly sprinted past first responders and attempted to commandeer the aircraft. Law enforcement stopped him before he could take off with the helicopter.
According to officials, the man made disturbing statements to police, claiming he had witnessed the anti-Christ moments before his truck veered off the road and collided with the other vehicle. The nature of these claims raised immediate concerns about his mental state during the incident.
Violent Resistance at Hospital and Jail
Troopers transported the suspect to Tampa General Hospital in Brooksville for medical evaluation, but he refused to cooperate with staff. Officers had to physically escort him inside the facility, where he continued resisting treatment. Medical personnel eventually had to forcibly restrain him in his seat to complete the examination. After doctors cleared him of serious medical issues, deputies transferred him to the Hernando County Detention Center, where his combative behavior persisted.
Jail records show authorities charged him with three counts of resisting officers without violent obstruction and one count of burglary. Bond information has not been released. The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
Victims’ Condition Remains Unknown
Officials have not provided updates on the condition of the two people injured in the initial crash. The severity of their injuries required immediate helicopter transport, suggesting significant trauma from the collision. The highway remained closed for several hours while investigators documented the scene and emergency crews cleared the wreckage. State troopers are continuing their investigation into what caused the suspect to lose control of his vehicle before the crash occurred.
