Fatal Capsizing in New York Harbor
Manuel Hernandez, 46, was arrested and charged with 13 counts of reckless endangerment following the Saturday night tragedy near Liberty Island. The U.S. Coast Guard reported that a 22-foot Bayliner pleasure craft overturned around 10:25 p.m., prompting a massive rescue operation involving police helicopters and harbor divers. Sara Sanchez and her infant daughter Antonella Garcia were pulled from the water and rushed to NYU Langone Health Brooklyn, where both died from their injuries.
The boat was designed to carry 10 to 12 passengers maximum, according to manufacturer specifications. All 12 other passengers required medical attention but survived. Hernandez was transferred to federal custody, and the New York Southern District Court now controls the investigation into what authorities suspect may have been an illegal charter operation.

Neighbors described Sanchez as a kind and friendly person who lived in Queens’ College Point neighborhood with her partner and children. Diego Naranjo, who met the family months earlier, said he saw the couple carrying groceries home just days before the tragedy struck their family.

The Coast Guard Investigative Service is conducting a full marine casualty investigation to determine what caused the boat to overturn in conditions that allowed other vessels to operate safely.
