WATCH: Man SHOOTS At Police Drone

A Florida man faces criminal charges after firing a weapon at a law enforcement surveillance drone that captured the entire incident on video, leading to his immediate arrest by deputies already responding to the scene.

Suspect Shoots at Law Enforcement Aircraft

Elvin Antonio Callejas-Serrato was arrested over the weekend in Lehigh Acres after Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies say he pointed a weapon at their Drone as First Responder and fired two rounds. The drone footage clearly shows Callejas-Serrato raising what appears to be a rifle, aiming directly at the camera, and firing. Deputies were already in the area responding to a call on Todd Avenue South when the shooting occurred, allowing them to quickly move in and detain the suspect.

When officers recovered the weapon, they discovered it was a BB gun loaded with steel projectiles. Despite not being a traditional firearm, the weapon could cause serious injury if misused. Callejas-Serrato now faces charges of shooting or throwing deadly missiles into an aircraft. The Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed whether others in the group with him will face charges.

Technology Designed to Protect Officers and Public

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno defended the department’s use of drone technology following the arrest. The Drone as First Responder program allows law enforcement to quickly assess dangerous situations before putting deputies in harm’s way. Marceno emphasized that these technological tools exist to protect both residents and officers, providing real-time intelligence that helps responders plan safer approaches to potentially volatile scenes.

The program has gained popularity among law enforcement agencies nationwide as drones provide aerial surveillance and threat assessment without requiring physical presence. Supporters argue the technology reduces risk for everyone involved by giving officers critical information before making contact. However, critics have raised concerns about privacy implications and expanded surveillance in residential neighborhoods.

Growing Use of Surveillance Drones Raises Questions

The incident highlights both the benefits and controversies surrounding law enforcement drone programs. While the technology allowed deputies to identify a potential threat and respond quickly, it also demonstrates how surveillance capabilities continue expanding in American communities. The investigation remains ongoing, and Callejas-Serrato is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. The case may set precedent for how authorities handle interference with unmanned aircraft during law enforcement operations.
