A 71-year-old man suffered a concussion and neck injuries after an Amazon delivery driver sucker-punched him from behind at a California gas station, all over a disputed parking space. Surveillance footage captured the brutal attack that has now resulted in both criminal charges and a civil lawsuit against the e-commerce giant.

Violent Confrontation Caught on Camera

The March 30 incident at an ARCO gas station in Elk Grove, California, unfolded when Terrence Wheeler, 30, of Antioch, wearing his Amazon jacket, aggressively confronted the elderly victim. Surveillance video shows Wheeler getting in the man’s face and threatening to beat him before delivering a punch from behind that sent the senior citizen crashing to the floor. The victim struggled to regain his footing after the unexpected assault.

Wheeler now faces serious criminal charges including felony elder abuse, felony criminal threats, and misdemeanor battery, according to reports from local news station KCRA. The violent outburst over a parking dispute has raised serious questions about screening procedures for delivery personnel who interact with the public daily.

Attorney Demands Accountability

The victim’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, who previously ran for mayor of Houston in 2019, shared the disturbing footage and announced a civil lawsuit filed in Sacramento County Superior Court. Buzbee claims his client required medical treatment for neck pain and a concussion following the attack. The lawyer stated Wheeler reacted in a hyper-aggressive manner and believes the driver has a documented history of violent behavior.

Buzbee emphasized that Amazon delivery personnel must undergo careful screening and proper training. He argued that when Amazon fails in its hiring process, as he claims happened here, the company must face accountability for the consequences. The civil case targets both Wheeler individually and Amazon as a corporation.

Amazon Distances Itself From Driver

An Amazon spokesperson clarified that Wheeler was not a direct employee of the company, but rather worked for an independent contractor handling package deliveries. After conducting an investigation, Amazon provided its findings to the third-party delivery company and permanently banned Wheeler from delivering any Amazon packages. The company’s reliance on independent contractors has come under scrutiny as these workers often wear Amazon-branded clothing and drive vehicles marked with the company logo, creating the public perception they represent Amazon directly.
