A school bus carrying students from the Maryland School for the Blind veered off the road and slammed into a pharmacy building in Baltimore County on Tuesday afternoon, leaving three people with minor injuries in a crash that shook neighboring businesses and drew immediate community response.
Bus Careens Into Building During School Route
The incident occurred around 2:40 p.m. in Parkville when the bus lost control and crashed into the pharmacy. Three students and two adults were aboard at the time of impact. The driver, one student, and another individual at the scene sustained minor injuries, according to police reports. The force of the collision was powerful enough to rattle the walls of Enchanted Cakes and Treats next door, knocking half the merchandise off the shelves.
Carrie Shelley, owner of the neighboring bakery, described the chaotic scene that unfolded immediately after impact. Witnesses from surrounding buildings rushed toward the bus and forced open its door to help occupants escape. A distressed student tumbled out of the bus shortly after bystanders gained access, Shelley told local media.
Teacher Races to Scene for Wheelchair-Bound Student
Carrie Crawford, a teacher at the Maryland School for the Blind who lives near the crash site, arrived at the scene fearing for her students’ safety. She expressed particular concern for one nonverbal girl who uses a wheelchair and had been riding the bus. Crawford’s fears were relieved when she found the student smiling and safely reunited with her father despite the traumatic incident.
Baltimore County Fire Bureau Chief Travis Francis addressed the community’s concerns at the scene, expressing gratitude that injuries remained minor. Authorities have launched an investigation into what caused the bus to lose control, though no preliminary findings have been released. Francis emphasized the importance of restoring calm to the residential neighborhood following the frightening accident.
Community Response and Investigation Underway
The Maryland School for the Blind serves visually impaired students throughout the region, making the safety of specialized transportation particularly critical for families who depend on these services. The quick response from neighbors and business owners demonstrated the tight-knit nature of the Parkville community. Authorities continue examining the circumstances that led to the bus veering off its route into the commercial building. Officials have not indicated whether mechanical failure, driver error, or external factors contributed to the crash that could have resulted in far more serious consequences for the vulnerable student population aboard.
