A congressional staffer working for a New York Republican representative survived a direct lightning strike while walking to a dental appointment on Staten Island, escaping with no burns or permanent injuries in what medical experts call an extraordinarily rare occurrence.
Direct Strike Sends Staffer to Ground
Thomas Fahmy, who works in Representative Nicole Malliotakis’s Staten Island office, was struck by lightning Thursday afternoon as he walked along Todt Avenue near Windsor Road in the Castleton Corners neighborhood. Security footage captured the moment the bolt hit Fahmy, sending him to the pavement just 15 to 20 feet from his parked vehicle. He remained conscious throughout the ordeal, experiencing what he described as intense burning sensations, tingling, numbness, and severe pain radiating through both feet as electricity surged through his body.
The staffer lay on the ground for several moments before crying out for help. Neighbor Stefanie Homan heard his calls from inside her home and immediately dialed emergency services. First responders transported Fahmy to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital, where medical staff conducted comprehensive examinations overnight. Doctors discharged him the following day after finding no burn marks or serious injuries despite the direct lightning contact.
Grateful Staffer Tests His Luck Again
Following his release from the hospital, Fahmy attended church services Sunday to express gratitude for his survival.
