The confrontation began when the bus stopped along Highway 49 near Russell Road and a student climbed out through a window. Nichole Wellington drove to the scene after her frightened son called from the bus. She approached the driver directly, requesting her child be released. When the driver refused, Wellington instructed her son to climb through a window. She told reporters the situation could have been resolved peacefully if the driver had simply released children to waiting parents instead of implementing a lockdown.
One Parent Arrested as Situation Escalates
As tensions mounted, one parent struck the bus door hard enough to shatter its glass. Deputies from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and arrested the parent on vandalism charges at the school district’s request. Law enforcement reminded the community that bus windows should only serve as emergency exits and criticized both students and parents for bypassing normal safety protocols. Several students reportedly exited through open windows during the incident.
Not all parents supported the aggressive response. Rebecca Glover had two children aboard but instructed them to remain seated. She emphasized the driver’s responsibility for every child on the bus, not just individual students whose parents arrived first. Calaveras Unified Superintendent Kassie Meeks stated the incident originated with concerns about student behavior that ultimately required police intervention. A 12-year-old passenger described the initial atmosphere as excited rather than threatening, with kids screaming because they were happy to get off the bus. The child said problems only started after another student climbed through a window, prompting the driver’s decision to lock down the vehicle. Sheriff’s officials stressed that school bus safety rules exist to protect students and must be followed by both children and parents alike.

Pity the poor bus driver who is trying to follow the law, keep the students in his care safe, and at the beginning of the year establish some authority (needed for the remainder of the school year and safety). Also, PITY every teacher who attempts to instruct these unruly, boisterous and undisciplined kids in anything. And we wonder why student achievement in the schools is so low. These behaviors interrupt the learning of every student in the school—not just the rebellious.

my wife was a school bus driver. drove the same route for 26 years. it was rural route, 25-30 miles out of town. she had a way with kids. if there was a problem, she could convince the kid to behave. if not, it was a trip to the principal’s office, or banned from the bus for a few days, depending on the incident. after the parent had to bring their kid to school and pick them up after school. after driving 25-30 miles twice each day, the parent would lay down the law to the kid. the kids respected my wife, and most of the time were good kids.
If the parents were present, the children should have been released. Breaking the window was probably not needed, but the district wanting the parent arrested and charged??? That’s stupid. The bus driver should have had to pay for it. My child would be attending a different school tomorrow, or I’d be home schooling.
Yep, that’s exactly why the kids act the way they do! No discipline by the parents, no guidance to abode by the rules/laws….just have it my way.
For the safety of the bus driver, the route should be cancelled and let the parents get their kids to school. If just one teen decides to exit thru a window, and it is not stopped by the driver, what is the liability? Sorry to say this is a bad decision, made by a show teen.
