Nichole Wellington drove to the scene after her frightened son called from the bus. She approached the driver directly, requesting her child be released. When the driver refused, Wellington instructed her son to climb through a window. She told reporters the situation could have been resolved peacefully if the driver had simply released children to waiting parents instead of implementing a lockdown.

One Parent Arrested as Situation Escalates

As tensions mounted, one parent struck the bus door hard enough to shatter its glass. Deputies from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and arrested the parent on vandalism charges at the school district’s request. Law enforcement reminded the community that bus windows should only serve as emergency exits and criticized both students and parents for bypassing normal safety protocols.
