A Los Angeles-area resident armed with illegal weapons was taken into custody at Trump National Golf Course days before a scheduled presidential visit, after federal agents observed him surveilling security operations and taking photographs throughout the property.
Surveillance and Arrest at Golf Resort
Jeanine John Taele, 38, of Downey, California, was arrested Sunday afternoon at the Rancho Palos Verdes course after plainclothes federal agents reported suspicious activity to local authorities. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department found a loaded magazine containing hollow-point bullets in Taele’s pants pocket during the initial contact at 3:28 p.m. The suspect had been walking the golf course grounds, photographing and videotaping what appeared to be security-planning activities ahead of the president’s scheduled Tuesday arrival.
A search of Taele’s vehicle in the club’s parking lot uncovered a loaded pistol. Deputies also learned the suspect was under investigation for robbery in the nearby city of El Segundo. Authorities arrested Taele on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm and possession of armor-piercing ammunition. President Trump arrived safely at the resort via Marine One helicopter Tuesday evening, approximately 48 hours after the arrest.
Arsenal Discovered During Home Search
Federal and local investigators executed a search warrant at Taele’s residence Monday, discovering an extensive weapons cache. Authorities seized an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, and substantial ammunition stores. Deputies also found multiple notebooks containing statements officials described as concerning, along with two radio signal devices. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bilal A. Essayli announced federal charges Tuesday night, filing a criminal complaint for possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle. The felony charge carries a minimum ten-year prison sentence.
Secret Service agent Armando Marquez, who oversees the Los Angeles field office, praised the coordinated response in a Wednesday statement. Marquez emphasized that protective measures begin well before each presidential visit, calling the case a strong example of proactive security work. The sheriff’s department statement made no mention of any direct threat to the president, though the timing and location raised security concerns.
Pattern of Security Incidents
The arrest occurred at the same golf course where Trump hosted a fundraiser Tuesday evening. Taele faces additional charges connected to the 2025 robbery investigation, including second-degree robbery, possessing large-capacity magazines, having a concealed firearm in a vehicle, and possession of a short-barreled rifle. Jail records confirmed Taele remained in custody Tuesday. The incident follows a 2024 assassination attempt on the president at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, where Ryan Routh was arrested after being observed pointing an AK-47 style rifle.
