Missing Football Player FOUND Dead After Boat Trip

A Mississippi college football player who disappeared during a Fourth of July boat trip with friends to a barrier island was found dead Monday morning, authorities confirmed. The body discovered in waters off Horn Island matches the description of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells.

Search Ends in Tragedy

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter reported that a body was located at approximately 8:45 a.m. Monday in the water just offshore from the western end of Horn Island. The discovery came after an intensive multi-agency search that spanned more than 48 hours across the Mississippi Gulf Coast waters. Wells, a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, was last spotted around 3 p.m. Saturday on the north end of Horn Island, reportedly talking to a girl before vanishing without explanation.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound athlete had traveled to the popular barrier island with friends, located about 10 miles off the Mississippi mainland. Witnesses last saw him wearing blue swim trunks and sunglasses with no shirt. Authorities remain uncertain whether Wells ever attempted to return to the mainland or what circumstances led to his death. The investigation continues as officials work to determine exactly what happened during those final hours on the island.

Massive Search Operation Deployed

The United Cajun Navy, a nonprofit disaster relief organization, launched extensive aerial reconnaissance missions covering waters between Horn Island and Ship Island, extending south to the Chandelier Islands. Aviation teams coordinated with surface vessels, directing boat crews to specific areas of interest spotted from the air. The United States Coast Guard, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, and Harrison County Sheriff’s Department joined Jackson County officials in the comprehensive search effort that involved volunteer pilots, boat captains, and drone operators. Before the body was discovered, United Cajun Navy spokesperson Brian Trascher appealed to anyone who had been on or near Horn Island on Saturday, asking them to recall any details that might assist searchers. The organization expressed gratitude for overwhelming community support during the operation. Wells’ mother made desperate pleas on Facebook, posting photos of her son from the day he disappeared and requesting any video footage or photographs from the area after 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Young Athlete Remembered

Wells previously played football at Ocean Springs High School before joining Southwest Mississippi Community College as a wide receiver. His mother’s Facebook posts described her son’s characteristic smile and sense of humor while expressing the family’s anguish during the search. Authorities have asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department at 228-769-3063 as the investigation into his death continues.
