An Ohio woman faces child endangerment charges after an 11-year-old girl disappeared during a boating trip on Lake Erie and another passenger was found dead in the water the following day. Authorities have suspended their search for the missing child and shifted to recovery operations.

Three Set Sail, Only One Returns Alive

The woman, identified as Gerrie, departed from Meinke Marina in Jerusalem Township with her young neighbor Cunningham and a male passenger named Ciha. Within just 15 minutes of leaving the dock, the 11-year-old Toledo girl vanished from the boat. The next morning, a boater discovered Ciha’s body floating in Lake Erie and immediately contacted emergency services. A deputy coroner confirmed drowning as the cause of death, though investigators have not determined whether it was accidental or suspicious.

Gerrie managed to swim to shore following the incident. Authorities later recovered the abandoned boat at West Sister Island, located nearby in the lake. Police questioned Gerrie about the mysterious death and disappearance before arresting her Friday on endangering children charges. She had been responsible for supervising Cunningham during the trip.

Search Efforts Exhausted for Missing Girl

The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department led an intensive search operation for the missing 11-year-old throughout the week. By Friday evening, authorities announced they had exhausted all available resources in their efforts to locate the child. The search officially transitioned from rescue to recovery, a grim acknowledgment that hopes of finding Cunningham alive had faded. Lake Erie’s unpredictable currents and vast expanse make recovery operations extremely challenging, even under optimal conditions.

Investigators have released few details about what transpired aboard the boat during those critical 15 minutes before Cunningham disappeared. Authorities have not disclosed Ciha’s relationship to either Gerrie or the missing child, nor have they explained how the situation deteriorated so rapidly. Gerrie remains held in jail on 50,000 dollars bail according to booking records. The investigation into both the death and disappearance continues as officials work to piece together the sequence of events that turned a routine boating trip into a tragedy claiming at least one life and potentially two.
