A University of Alabama student disappeared from a Barcelona nightclub during spring break and was found dead in the Mediterranean Sea two days later, Spanish authorities confirmed Thursday evening after deploying dive teams to search the waters near Port Olympic.
What Happened Outside the Nightclub
James Gracey, 20, was last seen leaving the Shoko nightclub around 3 a.m. Tuesday, when he became separated from his friends. A witness told Spanish media that Gracey walked toward rocky areas near the beach after exiting the nightclub. The junior from West Elmhurst, Illinois, never returned to the Airbnb rental located two miles away, where his group was staying, prompting concern from his traveling companions.
Recovery Efforts and Investigation
Police discovered Gracey’s wallet floating in the sea near Somorrostro beach on Wednesday, just a few hundred feet from the nightclub. Dive teams entered the water approximately 13 feet deep at 7:05 p.m. local time Thursday and returned with a body bag within 10 minutes. Authorities erected a blue screen to shield the recovery from public view. While police initially considered foul play after witnesses reported seeing Gracey leave with another person, investigators now believe his death was accidental. An autopsy is underway, with initial findings expected within two to three days, though final results may take several weeks.
Family and Community Reaction
Gracey served as chaplain of the Alpha Phi Chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity at Alabama. His family released a statement expressing devastation over the loss. Chapter president Cavin McLay described Gracey as a role model and a man of deep faith. Mike Mayer, the fraternity’s CEO, praised Gracey’s genuine care for others. The student was set to graduate next year and was known among his peers for his commitment to his faith and fraternity brothers.
Spring Break Safety Concerns
The tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about American college students traveling abroad during spring break. Barcelona’s Port Olympic area, known for its nightlife district along the Mediterranean coast, attracts thousands of young tourists each year. The rocky coastline near popular nightclubs presents particular hazards during nighttime hours. Gracey’s death marks another incident involving American students during international spring break trips, raising questions about safety protocols and group supervision during overseas travel.
