School COLLAPSE KILLS 27 Students — Death Toll Rising

A catastrophic structural failure at a private school in northwestern Pakistan claimed the lives of 27 children and one teacher Thursday morning, with rescue officials warning the death toll will likely climb as emergency crews continue pulling victims from the rubble of the collapsed building.

Deadly Building Failure During Class

The roof of the Al-Khair Education Center in Peshawar gave way while 110 students attended classes across three rooms, sending the upper floor crashing down onto the story below. Most victims were younger than 13 years old when the multi-story collapse trapped them under concrete and debris. District emergency officer Iftikhar Khan confirmed rescue teams extracted at least 45 children from the wreckage, while police chief Mian Saeed said only 47 of the 110 students present had been rescued by Thursday afternoon.

Television footage captured ambulances racing to the scene as first responders worked frantically to free bloodied students from the rubble. Twenty injured victims and most of the deceased were transported to Lady Reading Hospital, according to hospital spokesperson Mohammad Asim. Government official Bilal Faizi reported rescue teams continued working to recover bodies and transport survivors to medical facilities throughout the day.

Weak Structure Blamed For Tragedy

Police Chief Saeed identified structural deficiencies as the primary cause of the disaster, stating the building had weak construction that could not support the weight of its roof. A rescue official explained the ceiling collapsed onto students after the upper floor gave way, creating a cascading failure that pancaked two stories. Authorities have ordered an investigation to determine the full scope of what caused the deadly collapse. School officials had not issued any public statement by Thursday evening.

Pattern of Building Safety Failures

The tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about construction standards and building safety enforcement in Pakistan, where weak structural integrity and inadequate oversight have contributed to previous deadly collapses. Educational facilities, particularly private institutions in rapidly developing urban areas, often face scrutiny over compliance with building codes and safety regulations. The loss of young lives in preventable structural failures raises questions about accountability measures for school construction and inspection protocols designed to protect vulnerable populations from such disasters.
