A Michigan father shot and killed his wife and six children before setting their Grand Haven home on fire and turning the gun on himself, authorities confirmed Monday following a weekend investigation that uncovered one of the state’s most devastating family tragedies in recent years.

Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, killed his wife Amanda, 39, and their children ranging in age from 5 to 15 years old at their residence on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Captain Jake Sparks announced at a news conference. First responders arriving at the scene late Friday morning found all eight bodies in different bedrooms throughout the home. Autopsies confirmed each victim died from gunshot wounds before the fire started.

Firefighters and police responded around 11:42 a.m. Friday after neighbors reported seeing smoke and flames. Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set in multiple locations inside the residence. The violence likely began Thursday night and continued into Friday morning, based on earlier reports from residents who detected smoke in the neighborhood hours before emergency crews arrived.

Four of the children were the couple’s biological offspring, while two 11-year-old girls had been adopted into the family, Sparks said. Authorities declined to release the children’s identities at this time. Evidence indicates Karolkiewicz used a registered handgun in the attack, though investigators would not confirm whether a firearm was recovered from the fire-damaged property.
