A gunman opened fire on a vehicle carrying four people in southwest Atlanta early Monday morning, then disappeared before a massive SWAT operation could locate him. The shooter remains at large and faces multiple charges including aggravated assault.

Predawn Attack on Hartford Avenue

Atlanta police responded to reports of gunfire just before 4 a.m. in the 1300 block of Hartford Avenue. Investigators determined an argument had escalated before the suspect fired multiple shots at a vehicle with four occupants inside. Despite the gunfire targeting the car, none of the four people were injured in the attack. Officers immediately began searching the area for the shooter.

Police believed the armed suspect had fled into a nearby residence, prompting them to call in the SWAT team. Tactical officers in full gear surrounded the home and established a command post on Sylvan Road. The operation forced authorities to close multiple roads around Hartford Avenue and Sylvan Road for several hours during the Monday morning commute.

Five-Hour Search Ends Without Arrest

SWAT teams conducted an extensive search of the suspected location for more than five hours. Officers methodically cleared the home and surrounding properties but found no sign of the gunman. The tactical operation concluded shortly before 9:30 a.m. after authorities determined the suspect was not inside the residence as initially believed. Police have not released the suspect’s identity to the public.

The shooter now faces charges of aggravated assault and reckless conduct related to Monday’s shooting incident. Additionally, police revealed the suspect already had an outstanding warrant for a parole violation before the early morning attack. Authorities are actively working to locate and apprehend him.

School Operations Continue Nearby

Sylvan Hills Middle School, located near the incident area, maintained normal operations throughout the police activity according to Atlanta Public Schools. District officials coordinated with law enforcement to ensure student safety. Police officers remained on standby throughout the morning to assist students traveling to and from the campus if the situation required intervention. No disruptions to the school day were reported despite the major police presence in the surrounding neighborhood.
