A 74-year-old man suffered cracked ribs and broken teeth after a gang of six young males attacked him with a sword and rifle outside a Baltimore 7-Eleven, prompting community leaders to organize a march demanding accountability for the brutal assault.
Ten-Minute Attack Captured on Video
Surveillance footage from the July 7 incident shows the victim standing outside the Liberty Heights Avenue convenience store around 3:30 a.m. when two suspects approached displaying firearms. Four others quickly joined, shoving the elderly man and hurling objects at him before knocking him to the ground. The attackers struck him in the head with a gun and kicked him repeatedly while he lay defenseless.
One suspect wielded a sword during the assault while another repeatedly pointed a gun at the victim’s face. Despite the sustained violence, the man continued getting up and confronting his armed attackers. The assault lasted approximately 10 minutes before he managed to reach his vehicle and escape. Store employees confirmed the location was closed at the time, though the victim may have believed it remained open under its former 24-hour schedule.
Community Demands Justice
Dozens of residents marched from Mondawmin Mall to the crime scene on Sunday, calling for those responsible to surrender. Queen Mother Victory Swift, who organized the rally, has personal connections to violence at the same location where her youngest child was murdered in 2017. “When I was watching the video, all I was saying was, please don’t kill him,” Swift explained, noting she understood the devastating impact another death would have on the community.
Organizer Gwen Levi addressed the suspects directly, promising support for families willing to accept accountability. “Any one of these organizations is willing to stand with you, while you accept the accountability for your actions,” Levi stated. “We want your parents to know, we will not leave them alone.” The victim attended the rally but declined to speak publicly about his ordeal.
Fundraiser and Investigation Ongoing
Local organizations launched a fundraiser to cover the victim’s medical expenses and offer rewards for information leading to arrests. Ujimma Masani, another rally organizer, emphasized the need for community protection beyond just the Park Heights neighborhood.
