Driver BREAKS Pump And Drains Fuel In Minutes

A Las Vegas man faces grand theft charges after stealing 500 gallons of diesel fuel from a California gas station, causing $10,000 in damage during a brazen daylight heist that highlights surging fuel theft as prices soar past $7 per gallon.

How the Theft Unfolded

Antonio Chirno used a crowbar to break into a pump at a Lodi gas station, accessing the electrical system to bypass payment mechanisms. The suspect pumped diesel into hidden tanks concealed inside his truck, a sophisticated operation that took approximately five minutes to execute. Michael Kludt of Kludt Oil and Propane, whose station was targeted, explained that thieves split wires to gain control of the fuel flow without triggering standard payment systems.

An alert customer disrupted the theft by noticing Chirno had been parked at the pump for an unusually long time. The observant patron reported his suspicions to station management, leading to police involvement. Authorities impounded the truck and recovered the stolen fuel, though the damage to station equipment proved extensive and costly to repair.

California Fuel Crisis Drives Crime Wave

The theft occurs amid skyrocketing California fuel prices that have created criminal opportunities across the state. Premium gasoline now averages $6.17 per gallon, while diesel has surged to $7 per gallon, up from $5.01 just one month earlier. The same Lodi station suffered a much larger theft last year when criminals stole over 6,500 gallons of diesel, prompting Kludt to invest in enhanced security measures.

California drivers pay a substantial premium due to higher state excise and sales taxes, plus fees for climate programs unique to the state. The Golden State also requires a special fuel blend designed to prevent smog that only California refineries and specific Asian countries can produce, further limiting supply and driving costs upward.

Economic Impact on Families

Working Californians face crushing costs at the pump. Jill Gottlieb, a social worker for LA County Department of Health, paid $107 to fill her 2017 Mercedes at a Chevron station in downtown Los Angeles. Lawmakers and energy experts warn that Governor Gavin Newsom’s green agenda risks pushing gasoline prices above $8 per gallon, threatening household budgets across the state. Kludt warned that elevated fuel prices consistently drive theft increases, predicting more businesses will become targets as desperate criminals seek to profit from the crisis.
