Cop Shot 12 Times — Partner Dies Protecting Him

A Philadelphia police officer died protecting his community Saturday morning after a suspect with an extensive criminal record opened fire on responding officers, killing one ten-year veteran and shooting his partner twelve times in an ambush-style attack that left the entire city grieving.

Fallen Hero Leaves Behind Young Family

Officer Shane Seiber, 40, fought for his life after being shot three times during a routine call to a West Philadelphia residence. The ten-year veteran, who had recently completed SWAT training and hoped to join that elite unit, died surrounded by his wife and relatives at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel confirmed Seiber leaves behind two children. His partner, a 33-year-old father of five, suffered twelve gunshot wounds and remains in critical condition.

District Attorney Larry Krasner identified the shooter as Eric Lewis, 35, a neighborhood resident with a lengthy criminal history. Lewis faces multiple charges including murder of a law enforcement officer and attempted murder. He is being held without bail pending a preliminary hearing.

Ambush Attack Targeted Multiple Officers

Officers responded to reports of an armed man on a porch early Saturday morning. When they arrived and attempted to make contact, Lewis unleashed heavy gunfire on the approaching officers. Nine additional officers came under fire but were not struck. After the initial assault, Lewis allegedly seized one officer’s handgun during the attack. Pennsylvania State Representative Amen Brown, who lives nearby and witnessed the arrest, reported Lewis hid in a tree for hours before SWAT teams pulled him down. During his arrest, Lewis allegedly stated he wished he had killed more officers.

Community Leaders Demand Action Beyond Words

Mayor Cherelle Parker used the tragedy to call for expanded involuntary commitment laws covering not just severe mental illness but substance abuse and behavioral disorders that threaten public safety. Councilmember Curtis Jones rejected hollow responses, stating his focus remains on prosecution rather than empty sympathies. Governor Josh Shapiro ordered flags lowered to half-staff honoring Seiber’s sacrifice. Police recovered three weapons from the scene including two handguns and a shotgun. The incident underscores the daily dangers facing law enforcement officers who protect communities while armed criminals with extensive records remain on the streets despite previous offenses.
