Bodycam Shows Police SHOOT Austin Mass Shooter

Newly released bodycam footage captures the final moments of a mass shooting that left three dead and 16 wounded outside a downtown Austin bar, showing officers engaging the rifle-armed attacker in a fierce gun battle on a crowded street corner.

Chaotic Scene Unfolds on Sixth Street

The video shows multiple angles of the deadly encounter with Ndiaga Diagne, a 53-year-old Senegalese immigrant who opened fire on pedestrians near a popular roadhouse-style nightlife spot on Sixth Street. One clip captures an officer firing approximately a dozen shots while shouting, “Where is he? Where is he?” as Diagne stood on a nearby corner armed with an assault rifle. Moments later, the officer approaches the suspect sprawled on the sidewalk, calling out “shots fired! The suspect is down” before ordering him to stop moving.

Additional surveillance footage from a nearby building shows Diagne calmly crossing an intersection while opening fire at pedestrians on the sidewalk. The soundless footage concludes with the attacker collapsing to the ground as two officers approach to check his condition. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis called the footage “overwhelming” to watch during a Thursday press conference, revealing that members of the department’s public information office were “in tears” while reviewing it.

Victims Identified, Motive Under Investigation

The attack claimed the lives of three individuals: Savitha Shan, 21, a University of Texas at Austin student; Ryder Harrington, 19, a Texas Tech student; and Jorge Pederson, 30, a competitive MMA fighter from Minnesota. Two additional victims remain hospitalized, with one in critical condition. The total victim count increased from 16 to 19 as authorities continued their investigation. Chief Davis also released 911 recordings from the scene, including one caller stating, “There has been a shooting at Buford’s on Sixth Street. There are people dead over here. There have been multiple people shot. We need help right now.”

Limited Prior Contact With Authorities

Davis confirmed the Austin Police Department had no contact with Diagne before the attack. His only known interaction with law enforcement was a mental health welfare check in New York in 2022, which Davis said did not reach the severity threshold for involuntary commitment. The FBI is working closely with Austin police to determine a motive, including investigating what the bureau described as a “possible nexus to terrorism.” Davis declined to elaborate on the nature of this connection, stating she was “not ready to talk about” the specifics during the press conference.
