A 52-year-old man armed with a stolen handgun terrorized multiple drivers on a Florida roadway Wednesday morning, aiming a loaded weapon at passing vehicles including one carrying a grandmother and her young granddaughters headed to school.
Armed Pedestrian Threatens Morning Commuters
George Edwards Stone was arrested in Apopka on October 2nd after Orange County deputies responded to reports of an armed man walking in the roadway on West McCormick Road. Authorities received the emergency call at 9:28 a.m. and located Stone minutes later in a nearby Circle K parking lot, still holding the handgun. Stone complied with deputy commands, placed the weapon on the ground, and was taken into custody without resistance.
One driver who contacted 911 told investigators she was transporting her granddaughters to school when she stopped at a traffic light and saw Stone pointing the gun directly at her vehicle. She immediately reversed her car to create distance from the armed pedestrian. After backing away, she witnessed Stone continue to aim the weapon at other passing motorists before she called for help.
Stolen Weapon With Round Chambered
Deputies discovered the handgun Stone carried had one round loaded in the chamber and ready to fire. The weapon had been reported stolen in Lake County in December 2025, approximately ten months before the incident. During questioning, Stone told authorities he had possessed the firearm for roughly two months. He also admitted to firing the gun multiple times into the ground earlier that same day at a location he did not specify to investigators.
Serious Charges Filed
Stone now faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and improper exhibition of a firearm. Both charges carry significant penalties under Florida law, particularly given the circumstances involving multiple victims and the presence of children. The case highlights ongoing concerns about stolen firearms circulating in communities and the dangers posed when individuals brandish weapons in public spaces. Authorities have not released information about Stone’s criminal history or whether he legally possessed firearms prior to this incident. The investigation remains active as prosecutors build their case.
