Roller Coaster Tragedy Leaves 1 Dead

A tragic incident at Six Flags Over Georgia left one guest dead and multiple others injured Monday afternoon, prompting authorities to launch a full investigation into what went wrong on one of the park’s premier attractions.

Emergency Response at Theme Park

The Cobb County Police Department responded to the amusement park shortly before 4 p.m. Monday following reports of injuries on a roller coaster. Officers confirmed one fatality and several injuries, though authorities have not released the victim’s identity or specific details about the circumstances. CBS News cameras captured footage of the park’s Goliath roller coaster shut down, with guests being evacuated down an emergency stairway from the ride’s tallest hill, which reaches 200 feet above ground.

Park management ordered an immediate closure following the incident. Sherry Sutton, whose children had ridden the Goliath just 20 minutes before the emergency, described how guests learned of the closure. The announcement came faintly over the park’s speaker system, barely audible beneath the background music, instructing all visitors to leave immediately. Guests departed in an orderly manner as word spread through the crowds.

Investigation Underway

Six Flags released a statement expressing deep sadness over the tragedy and extending condolences to the victim’s family and friends. The company confirmed its team and local authorities responded immediately to the emergency. Park officials stated they are providing support to affected guests and staff members while cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation. Mableton Mayor Michael Owens confirmed the city’s public safety director is coordinating with Cobb County authorities and park management as investigators work to determine what caused the fatal incident.

About The Goliath Ride

The Goliath opened at Six Flags Over Georgia in 2006 and stands as the park’s tallest roller coaster at 200 feet. The ride features a 170-foot drop and reaches speeds up to 70 miles per hour, making it one of the park’s most popular attractions. The coaster typically operates with multiple safety systems and regular inspections, though details about the ride’s maintenance history and what may have failed remain under investigation by authorities.
