A school resource deputy fatally shot an armed suspect who approached Evergreen Middle School in Spokane Valley, Washington on Tuesday morning, presenting what authorities described as a lethal threat to students and staff. No children or school personnel were injured in the incident.

Threat Unfolds on School Grounds

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office received a call at approximately 11:30 a.m. reporting a suspicious man walking across the football field toward Evergreen Middle School at 14221 E. 16th Ave. The initial caller described the individual as sweating profusely and adjusting his waistband, though no weapon was visible at that time. Within minutes, the caller provided a critical update stating the suspect was armed with what appeared to be a black and silver Glock 19 handgun.

School administrators immediately placed the campus on lockdown as the situation escalated. A school resource deputy arrived within five minutes of the original emergency call. According to the sheriff’s office, the armed suspect approached the deputy and presented a lethal threat with what appeared to be a firearm. The deputy discharged his weapon, striking the suspect. Additional law enforcement units arrived quickly and requested medical assistance, but lifesaving efforts proved unsuccessful and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Explosive Concerns Heighten Security Response

The Spokane Regional Explosives Disposal Unit was summoned after authorities discovered a bag believed to have been discarded by the suspect near the school property. Technicians could not immediately rule out the possibility of explosive materials, prompting officials to relocate students and staff to a more secure area within the building. The explosives team disrupted and rendered the bag safe. Subsequent inspection determined it did not contain an explosive device. Deputies conducted a comprehensive search of the school and surrounding grounds to check for any additional suspects or threatening items.

Investigation and Family Reunification

Once law enforcement confirmed the scene was secure, students were transported by bus to Valley Real Life Church where anxious families waited for reunification. The Spokane Independent Investigative Response Team is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting, with the Spokane Police Department serving as the primary investigative contact. Authorities have not yet released the name of the deputy involved in the shooting. The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the suspect’s identity along with the cause and manner of death when appropriate. After the independent investigation concludes, the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Investigators are still working to determine whether the initial caller and the suspect were the same individual.
