Federal Agents DRAW Weapons in Street Confrontation

Immigration officers drew weapons and arrested activists following their enforcement convoy in Minneapolis, escalating tensions between federal agents and local protesters tracking immigration operations.

Confrontation in South Minneapolis

Federal agents stopped their vehicles on Tuesday and ordered activists out of their cars at gunpoint after several vehicles followed officers conducting home visits in south Minneapolis. At least one person wearing anti-ICE messaging was handcuffed face-down on the ground as agents threatened reporters with pepper spray. Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said agents detained the activists because they hindered efforts to arrest someone in the country illegally.

The arrests occurred amid changing federal enforcement tactics. Immigration agents have shifted from staging in parking lots to conducting targeted arrests at homes and neighborhoods, making their operations harder to track. The confrontation follows the departure of Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino and the arrival of Trump administration border czar Tom Homan after protester Alex Pretti’s fatal shooting.

Schools Under Pressure

Education leaders reported widespread fear in Minnesota schools as immigration enforcement intensifies. Fridley Public Schools superintendent Brenda Lewis said ICE agents have followed her twice since speaking publicly and positioned vehicles outside school board members’ homes. Students and parents fear attending school, while staff worry about potential incidents. The district, serving Somali and Ecuadorian families, has added security and adjusted drop-off procedures.

Legal and Political Tensions

A federal judge previously limited how officers treat motorists following them, ruling that safely following agents at appropriate distances does not justify vehicle stops. However, an appeals court set aside those restrictions. Governor Tim Walz noted the situation has become more chilling as enforcement shifts toward schools and children. Meanwhile, Minneapolis faced a Tuesday deadline to provide federal grand jury information as part of Justice Department requests for records regarding the city’s response to immigration enforcement.
