94,000 RECALLED — Fire Risk!

Hyundai has issued an urgent recall affecting more than 94,000 luxury sedans after discovering a defect that could cause vehicles to catch fire even while parked and unoccupied, putting families and property at serious risk.

Power Seat Malfunction Creates Fire Hazard

The recall targets 39,978 Genesis G80 sedans from model years 2017-2020 and 54,644 Hyundai Genesis sedans from 2015-2016. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a faulty power seat control switch can become dislodged or damaged, causing the seat adjustment motor to run continuously even after drivers exit their vehicles. The prolonged motor operation generates excessive heat, creating conditions for a potential fire whether the car is being driven or sitting in a garage.

Warning signs include a burning odor and seat control switches that stop working properly. Hyundai estimates that approximately one percent of the recalled vehicles actually contain the defective component, though the company confirmed two fire incidents have already occurred related to this issue. No crashes or injuries have been reported in the United States as of October 1.

Safety Officials Issue Parking Warning

Federal safety regulators are taking the threat seriously enough to recommend that owners park their affected vehicles outside and away from other cars, homes, and structures until repairs are completed. This precaution aims to prevent potential property damage or injury if a fire were to start while a vehicle sits unattended. Hyundai is currently developing a remedy for the defect and will notify affected owners by mail once the fix becomes available.

Vehicle owners can bring their sedans to authorized Hyundai dealers or Genesis retailers for the free repair once the solution is ready. The company has not yet announced a timeline for when replacement parts will be available or how long the repair process will take.

What This Means For Owners

This recall underscores the importance of responding promptly to manufacturer safety notices, even when the estimated defect rate appears low. With two fires already confirmed and thousands of potentially affected vehicles still on the road, owners of 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis and 2017-2020 Genesis G80 sedans should watch their mail for official recall notifications and follow NHTSA parking recommendations until their vehicles receive the necessary repairs. The defect poses risks whether cars are in use or sitting idle, making swift action essential for protecting both people and property.
