Spring Break Shooting SPREE Leaves Officer Critical

A South Daytona Beach police officer underwent surgery after being shot twice during a violent spring break weekend that saw five separate shootings and 133 arrests across Florida’s popular beach destination.

Officer Shot During Suspect Pursuit

Officer Jake Fessenden was hospitalized Sunday after responding to reports of gunfire near Country Lane. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Todd Anthony Martin, fled in his vehicle before crashing on northbound I-95. Martin then opened fire on pursuing deputies, striking Fessenden twice in critical areas. Another officer returned fire, hitting Martin, who remains in critical condition. Fessenden underwent surgery and is expected to survive. Authorities said all victims from the weekend’s five shootings are expected to recover.

Five Shootings Rock Beach Community

The violence began on Friday when a fight broke out at the Joint Bar in Seabreeze, just off the beach strip. One shot was fired, though no one was injured. An hour later, another person was shot outside a nearby Crunch Fitness. Saturday brought two more beachside shootings, including one outside the popular Crusin’ Cafe, located two blocks from crowded beaches. Witnesses described chaotic scenes with panicked crowds fleeing the area. One visitor told local media that a tourist asked whether they should leave Florida entirely after experiencing the violence.

Mass Panic From Crushed Water Bottles

Adding to the weekend chaos, mass panic erupted on the beach after individuals crushed water bottles, creating sounds mistaken for gunfire. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office confirmed no shootings occurred on the beach itself, though the confusion sent crowds running for cover. Witnesses described scenes of spring breakers twerking, dancing, stopping traffic, and creating gridlock. Officials arrested 133 people over the weekend, including 84 in Daytona Beach specifically. Police are still investigating whether any shootings were directly related to spring break activities.

Zero Tolerance Enforcement Begins

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood announced zero tolerance policies and designated special event zones within Daytona Beach effective Friday at 11 a.m. The zones allow specialized resources to respond to multiple unsanctioned public events promoted to spring breakers on social media. Chitwood warned violators face financial consequences, specifically mentioning vehicle seizures. The crackdown comes as authorities attempt to regain control of the popular destination, overwhelmed by unruly crowds and violence during what should be a family-friendly spring vacation period.
