A man in his 20s or 30s died Thursday night after pointing a firearm at Federal Way police officers outside The Commons mall, authorities confirmed. The suspect had threatened multiple civilians with the weapon before the fatal encounter.
Suspect Threatened Shoppers Before Police Arrival
Multiple witnesses called 911 shortly before 7 p.m. reporting an armed man outside the shopping center in the 2000 block of South Commons. The suspect was actively pointing his weapon at bystanders in the mall area, according to Federal Way Police Department Commander Bryan Klingele. At least one witness reported hearing the armed man state he was specifically waiting for law enforcement to arrive at the scene.
The dangerous situation unfolded during prime evening shopping hours when families and residents typically frequent the retail location. The armed suspect’s actions created an immediate threat to public safety in the busy commercial district, prompting the emergency response from multiple law enforcement units.
Officers Respond With Deadly Force
When Federal Way police officers arrived on scene, the suspect turned his firearm toward the responding officers, Klingele reported. Officers discharged their weapons, striking the armed man. First responders immediately provided medical assistance, but the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the location. The department has not disclosed how many officers fired their weapons during the confrontation.
All officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which Commander Klingele confirmed is standard department protocol following officer-involved shootings. The Valley Independent Investigation Team will conduct an independent review of the incident, removing the investigation from Federal Way Police Department’s direct control to ensure impartiality.
Massive Response Closes Roads and Parking Areas
The incident triggered a substantial law enforcement presence across the mall property and surrounding area. KING 5 reporter Jim Nelson documented dozens of police officers investigating the back parking lot where the shooting occurred. Yellow police tape cordoned off the rear parking area, adjacent roadways, and parking lots of businesses across the street from the mall. Nearby roads remained closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene.
Federal Way police confirmed no officers or civilians sustained injuries during the armed confrontation. The department has not released the suspect’s identity pending notification of family members. Authorities have not disclosed whether the firearm was loaded or if the suspect fired any rounds before officers responded with lethal force.
