A Walmart in Deptford Township, New Jersey, became a hazmat scene Tuesday afternoon when mysterious fumes sent 19 people to the hospital with respiratory problems, coughing, and dizziness. Despite extensive searches by emergency crews, the source of the irritant remains unknown.

Mass Evacuation After 911 Calls

Multiple shoppers called 911 around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday reporting breathing difficulties inside the Walmart on Cooper Street. When firefighters arrived, they found nearly two dozen people streaming out of the store coughing and showing signs of respiratory distress. Andrew Halter, chief of hazmat for Gloucester County Emergency Response, said the store was immediately evacuated as a precaution. All 19 hospitalized victims were treated for minor issues and released within hours.

Jeffrey Jones and his two sons were among those affected while inside the store’s barbershop. Jones told reporters there was no visible indication of danger in the air. His family suddenly experienced throat irritation, nausea, dizziness, headaches, and tingling sensations. They left immediately and sought medical attention. Jones expressed concern as a father, stating his priority was ensuring authorities identify what caused the symptoms.

No Hazards Found Despite Thorough Search

Fire and hazmat crews, working alongside Walmart facilities staff, conducted a comprehensive inspection of the building but found no identifiable hazards. The store was eventually cleared safe for employees to begin deep cleaning operations before the scheduled 6 a.m. Wednesday reopening. Authorities plan to review surveillance footage to determine if the incident was caught on camera and will examine mechanical systems for potential failures. The investigation involves multiple agencies working to identify the mysterious irritant.
