A Houston mother who survived being shot five times during a random shooting spree managed to drive herself and her wounded daughter to safety, demonstrating extraordinary courage under fire. Shameeka Jones and her 21-year-old daughter were traveling to a routine hair appointment when a gunman armed with a rifle began firing at random vehicles along North Wayside Drive in northeast Houston.

Terror on North Wayside Drive

Jones initially believed she was caught in crossfire between two parties. However, as bullets continued striking her vehicle, she realized someone was targeting them directly. The sound of her window shattering confirmed the horrifying reality. Jones counted multiple gunshots hitting their car before her daughter suddenly announced she could not breathe. Looking over, Jones saw blood and quickly discovered she had been shot multiple times herself. Her phone had been destroyed by a bullet, forcing her daughter to call 911 on her own device.

Despite suffering five gunshot wounds—two to her leg, two to her abdomen, and one grazing her shoulder—Jones maintained control of the vehicle and drove directly to the nearest fire station. Her daughter sustained a single gunshot wound to the leg. Both women survived and have since been released from the hospital. Houston police identified the shooter as Demetri O’Neal Thomas, who witnesses described as wearing fishnets while firing at random cars. Three people total were struck during the rampage. Law enforcement later shot Thomas during his arrest. He remained hospitalized while facing aggravated assault charges and was scheduled for a bail review hearing. Jones told reporters she never saw the gunman during the attack and only learned details about him from videos circulating online afterward.
