A permitted Independence Day celebration in North Charleston turned into a violent clash when a mob of teenagers attacked two police officers attempting to shut down an event that spiraled into gunfire and chaos, authorities reported Sunday.
Celebration Descends Into Violence
The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. in the Chicora-Cherokee neighborhood when what began as a city-approved gathering deteriorated into dangerous disorder. Police Chief Ron Camacho said the department had worked with organizers earlier that day to coordinate parking and traffic plans, but the situation changed dramatically after nightfall. Reports surfaced of attendees firing guns and launching fireworks directly at passing vehicles, prompting officers to intervene and disperse the crowd.
Officers initially attempted to break up the celebration peacefully, but partygoers ignored their commands. Fights erupted among attendees, and gunshots rang out through the neighborhood. When two officers exited their vehicles to stop the fighting, they became targets themselves. Video footage captured one officer being pushed to the ground by a youth, then punched in the face by another individual while a third struck her with a stick.
Four Arrested, Weapons Recovered
A second officer rushed to help his colleague but immediately faced assault from multiple attackers. The footage shows him deploying his taser against one assailant to prevent the growing mob from overwhelming them both. Authorities arrested four individuals at the scene: three juveniles and one adult. Police recovered four firearms from the location, including two automatic weapons, along with a homemade spear that had been used during the attack.
Chief Pleads For Community Support
During a Sunday press conference, Chief Camacho described the officers’ ordeal as the most challenging situation he has encountered throughout his law enforcement career. He issued a direct appeal to North Charleston residents, asking for community cooperation in maintaining order and supervising young people. “We need some help. We really do. We need some help from the community. Because stuff like this is getting dangerous,” Camacho stated. The department continues investigating the incident and reviewing whether additional charges will be filed against other participants in the attack.

It is a wonder the police did not shoot them, It shows a lot of restraint on their part.
I agree, although I imagine if it would have escalated much further it could have gone that direction. Why is it that so many teens seem to have zero common sense now days. 2 of these teens were 18&19 years old and will be triad as adults. Attacking police should at least get you 15-18 months in the can.
Teenagers under 18 acting like adult thugs should be charged as adults thugs. I hope their parents are held legally responsible also. Nip this behavior in the bud while it’s still early enough. If they’re not punished to fit the crime, they will continue and maybe worse. Look at the widespread crime nationwide by adults and juveniles – it needs to stop. We need to stop being soft on crime. Do the crime, do the time. No more coddling. Parents need to discipline their children at home and maybe this wouldn’t start to begin with. In the 50’s and 60’s, the child psychologist, Benjamin Spock who recommended against “spare the rod, spoil the child” parenting, failed us big time.

Thank God the police officers (PO) didn’t use their weapons as you suggest. However, every person involved and their parents should be arrested. No more block parties should be allowed unless the organizers have to hire at least two Security Officers .

There is a growing problem with violent and seriously disruptive behavior among some young people. When someone is old enough to assault, seriously injure, or kill another person, the justice system should respond firmly and hold them accountable for their actions.
Law enforcement officers should be able to protect themselves and the public when confronted with violence, using the level of force that is lawful and necessary to stop the threat. No officer should have to hesitate when their life or the lives of others are in danger.

Teen take-overs, unalive, BS! Call a riot a RIOT! Call kill, KILL! Although I don’t want to see anyone hurt, perhaps sacrificing a few of the more vicious rioters might impress upon the greater unwashed (literally), that playing with fire WILL get you burned. Where are the parents of the minors involved? Is there no discipline in the home these days? I guess after reading the statistic that in 2025 40% of the births in the USA were to unwed females. That means that in a vast majority of the cases there is no father involved the the child’s life and of course the mother either has to work or is on welfare. In either case it means no supervision in the home. It’s a sad state of affairs in our society.
Agree. I was born in the 60s and my parents always said Spock and his followers started all this crap. If we did something stupid and potentially dangerous we got the butt pop (ONLY on the backside and open handed – no punches, belts or paddles) – FIRST, followed by the 20-30 minute lecture about every POSSIBLE bad thing that could have happened, (and how disappointed they were in our behavior) and FINALLY followed by how many days we were grounded (house/yard only) depending on the severity of what we did.
Violations were rarely repeated in our house. Parenting is not a popularity contest. Its a necessity to be sure our kids become good people. Sometimes “walking away” is the BEST option.
Large unruly crowd control requires pre planning. Before our yearly invasion of drunk college kids the city held meetings with every bar, club and hotel owner to go over security the bigger nightclubs had larger security details than the police department usually including a few that had arrest powers as they were constables or off duty sheriff deputies.
