Georgia Student RUNS Over Teacher During Senior Prank

A Georgia high school student faces vehicular homicide charges after accidentally running over his math teacher during a graduation prank, while the victim’s family fights to prevent what they call a second tragedy from destroying young lives.

Fatal Accident During Traditional Senior Prank

Jayden Ryan Wallace, 18, was charged with first-degree vehicular homicide after striking North Hall High School teacher Jason Hughes, 40, outside the educator’s home Friday night. Wallace and four other students were toilet-papering trees on Hughes’ property when the teacher emerged from his house and slipped on the roadway. As Wallace began driving his pickup truck on North Gate Drive, Hughes fell directly into the vehicle’s path and was run over, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. Despite immediate efforts by the students to help, Hughes died later at a hospital.

Family Demands Charges Dropped Against Students

Hughes’ family revealed Monday that the beloved math teacher knew the students planned to prank him and was excited to catch them in the act. The family issued a statement calling for prosecutors to drop all charges against the five teenagers, stating that pursuing the case would contradict Jason’s lifelong dedication to investing in young lives. More than 3,000 people have signed a petition supporting the students, with many commenters emphasizing the lack of malicious intent and arguing that these young people will carry the burden of this accident forever without criminal prosecution.

Student Pledges to Honor Teacher’s Memory

Wallace apologized through his attorney and pledged to live the remainder of his life honoring Coach Hughes’ memory. His parents expressed deep remorse, noting that Hughes had invested personally in their son and made a lasting impact on his life. Wallace faces additional charges of reckless driving, criminal trespass and littering, while the four other students were charged with criminal trespass and littering. Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh told media outlets the case remains under review following completion of the law enforcement investigation, declining further comment until the matter is resolved.
