A 27-year-old suspect earned the nickname ‘Oscar the Grouch’ after police body camera footage captured him hiding inside a garbage bin during a foot chase, only to make a desperate escape attempt that ended in his swift arrest by Huber Heights, Ohio officers.
Traffic Stop Turns Into Trash Bin Chase
Huber Heights Police initiated a routine traffic stop Monday when the driver, later identified as Jonathan McMillan, fled on foot. Officers temporarily lost sight of the suspect but quickly established a perimeter in the surrounding area. The dramatic turn came when a sanitation worker made a startling discovery during his regular trash collection route. Video footage shows the clearly shocked worker backing away and pointing at a just-opened trash bin behind his garbage truck as McMillan suddenly popped up from inside the container.
Officers Praised for Swift Response
McMillan jumped from the trash bin and attempted to run, but police credited a second officer’s “impressive athletic ability and swift response” for the quick apprehension. The suspect managed to flee several apartments away before officers caught up with him. Police emphasized that McMillan was taken into custody without injury to anyone involved, including the startled sanitation worker who first spotted him. The department later stated the suspect “appeared at just the right place and the right time” for officers to make the arrest.
Charges Filed, Warning Issued
McMillan was booked into Montgomery County Jail on charges of obstructing official business and resisting arrest. He also faced an outstanding warrant from Miami County. In an ironic twist, police issued only a warning for the original traffic violation that sparked the entire incident. The case highlights the escalating consequences suspects face when they choose to flee from routine traffic stops rather than cooperate with law enforcement. What began as a minor traffic matter resulted in serious criminal charges and a widely circulated video that earned McMillan his unflattering nickname.
